You might not think of Calgary as a hotbed of contemporary classical music. (Hotbed: a biological term for an area of decaying matter that is warmer than its surroundings. Or, an environment that favours rapid growth or development. I prefer that one.)
With new music ensembles such as Land's End and Timepoint, alongside presenters like New Works Calgary, though, I think you could make the case that we're on our way. And Exhibit A would be adventurous, imaginative Calgarian musicians like Jiajia Li.
Her latest project is called The Warehouse Live, presented in partnership with Wu & McHugh. Launching this Friday, May 25th, it's a series of inspired improvisations in a converted space in Calgary's industrial SE.
